Our Approach
The Council's Mission
The mission of the Diversity and Inclusion council is to educate, promote, and help implement diversity and inclusion in everyday lives. The goal is to create a “beloved community” where everyone can respect each other’s differences, and help educate the uneducated, help the less fortunate, and bring the community together as a whole.
How the City Benefits
With the implementation of a Diversity Council, it gives the city a good look that they are trying to help encourage people of all different backgrounds to come live here and show that they are welcomed.
With the Diversity and Inclusion council, it will attract more people because they will feel welcomed and safe because their city has a D&I council. The council will act as not only a task force, but as an expectation. With more people coming into the city, that will lead to the creation of more businesses, jobs, housing, and more.
Goals. What are the goals?
The goals are simply to educate the community on diversity and inclusion and bring everyone together to create a “beloved community”. This will cause the city to be an attractable place to live and start businesses, and most importantly, allow everyone in the community to feel welcomed.
The youth are the future. Helping educate the youth on diversity and inclusion will help prepare them for their future career goals. It may also encourage them to stay in the city instead of moving away after college. This will increase the population of the city, which in turn will cause the city to grow, which will bring more businesses and create more jobs.
How will the council work?
The chair of the council appoints members he/she sees fit to be on the council. Subcommittees may also be formed if it is in the best interest of the council. Those on the council will work to identify and come up with ideas on how they can help educate, promote, and help implement diversity in the city. That can range anywhere from working with the schools, churches, businesses, and the city to host events, seminars, programs, etc.
The Council's Five Steps
Social Justice
Provide education on different societal issues and how to be an ally.
Education
Provide educational resources to after-school programs, K-12 and post-secondary schools to help students learn, practice, and apply DE&I in their daily lives.
Criminal Justice
Work with first responders and law enforcement to provide DE&I educational resources for the workplace.
Youth Programming
Educate and work with the youth and young adults to educate them on DE&I and prepare them for their professional careers and more.
Mindfullness
Provide educational seminars on how to think, communicate, and interact with an open mind.
Who benefits from this?
Everyone. The city, and the citizens will be able to benefit from this if they are willing. The councils work will benefit everyone in the community, and not just one particular group. The main focus will always be education. The youth are the future, so a majority of the work will be educating and helping the youth.
